What could be more alluring right now than a country drive, especially one that winds up at the White Horse Pub in Marbledale? But don't just take it from us: Even so vaunted a trip advisor as, well, TripAdvisor, recently awarded them a certificate of excellence for its "consistently exceptional traveler ratings over the past year."

So what else is new at the White Horse? Plenty. Here are some recent menu additions: short ribs of beef (slow-braised for 24 hours in Cabernet and herbs), coq au vin, pecan-crusted pork tenderloin, and linguine vongole with bacon.

For lunch, they've added a delicious-sounding lamb kofta sandwich ("herb-grilled lamb patties with tomato, cucumber, parsley, mint, red onion and harissa mayonnaise on grilled naan bread") and a short rib sandwich served Korean-style to an already tempting roster, which includes the extravagantly endowed House Signature Burger, a half pound of Black Angus sirloin, brisket and short rib, with applewood-smoked bacon, caramelized onions, and sage derby blue cheese sauce, on a toasted brioche.

Other enticements include crackling fires in the handsome stone fireplace, the 1920 Indian motorcycle over the bar, a heated patio practically on top of the Aspetuck River, where you can still sit, even if and when the weather ever gets cooler (blankets are provided), and thre's much, much more. But let's not forget charming proprietor (and British transplant) John Harris, who makes the White Horse all that a pub an be.
