Well a new place to eat and within a short driving distance. It is called The White Horse, A Country Pub & Restaurant, located Route 202, Marbledale, Ct (860-868-1496). Open 7 days a week 11am until 10pm. Sunday Brunch 11am until 4pm.
Some of you may remember the Marbledale Pub which was the previous restaurant and years back this was a great place yo grab a bite to eat. They have completely redone this restaurant to look like an authentic English Pub. The decor is great. Cathedral ceilings with beams, museum artifacts on the walls, and a wonderful fireplace in the bar area. They have two outside dining areas, the Deck and the Patio, overlooking the rive (East Aspetuck), which I kind of knew was there, but you couldn't see it from the previous restaurant. They added windows, so you can see it from the inside and from the dining areas outside. Also in the bar area is an antique behind the bar, which I am not going to tell you about, you will just have to go there to see it.
Because it is an English Pub there are many English delights on the menu. My husband Bob (he being English) loves the Bangers and Mash. English pork sausages with mashed potatoes and gravy. $13.75 He absolutely loved them. I had Moules Frite (Mussels). These were served in a big crock pot, with white wine, shallots and cream, and served with fries (Sweet and White). $17.50. There was a good amount of sweet Prince Edward Island Mussels and the broth was delicious. Linda C. Enjoyed the Steakhouse Shepherds Pie. Ground sirloin, carrots, peas, onion in brown gravy, topped with mashed potatoes and baked until brown and bubbly. $14.75 Bill C. decided to have one of their Salads. The prices run (dinner) $4.75 for a House side Salad to Shrimp and Crab Salad. $13.75 He had the Country Cobb Salad, greens, tomatoes, avocado, turkey, eggs, smoked bacon and blue cheese $9.75. (He also helped us finish our meals.) Soph and Mary Lou D. had the Topless Kobe Burger Salad which he stated was the best burger he ever had. The Appetizers that I saw being served looked wondeful. One in particular, Coconut Shrimp, I can't wait to go back and have 5 large shrimp covered in coconut, served crispy with a marmalade dipping sauce. This was for me, big enough for a meal. $9.25 Appetizers run from $6.75 to $9.25. A main entree, Lamb Shank would also be another of my choices $18.25. A woman was served this and commented to me that it was delicious. Entree prices range from $14.25 to $18.25 which is really a bargain, when you consider the quality and a little bit of different dining. They have a lot of different Burgers including a Kobe Burger and Vegan Burger, $7.00 to $13.50. These are served with a mix of British Fries and Sweet Potatoes. And now for the desserts, I did not have any but Bob did and Linda did, and Bill and I had a taste of their delights. Bob had Banoffie Pie $6.00, an English dessert, banana, toffee, cream pie, yummy. Linda had the English Toffee Pecan Pie $6.00, which really was more of a tart with loads of Pecans in and around the tart and a jigger of Scotch cooked in or soaked in. Absolutely sinful. So treat yourselves and drive to the White Horse and have a pleasant surprise along with that wonderful ride that I have described in previous writings thru Roxbury, Washington and on to Marbledale.
