White Horse Pub, Washington, Conn.
With the East Aspetuck River rushing along directly behind the White Horse Country Pub and Restaurant in the Marbledale section of Washington, Conn., the outdoor dining experience here offers a taste of British tradition in more ways than one. " When the weather is pleasant, people just love it," said owner John Harris, who will soon be celebrating the one year anniversary of the pub. There's both a patio and a deck, prompting Mr. Harris to say, " What is nice is you have the choice of two different places to sit. It is very zen."
During the summer, the perfect al fresco dish is the White Horse's seafood bake, which is served in an iron crock and offers a mixture of clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, salmon, onions, garlic and fennel, with a touch of Pernod and white wine. Other popular seafood specialties include the fish-and-chips, the macadamia nut-crusted swordfish and diver sea scallops wrapped in banana leaves in white wine with fresh pineapple, tomatoes and sweet chili sauce.
The White Horse Country Pub and Restaurant is located at 258 New Milford Turnpike in Washington, Conn. For more information: 860-868-1496, www.whitehorsecountrypub.com.
