The best pubs in the great British tradition have several things in common: a comforting, haven-like interior, good hearty food, generous libations and, whether city or country, a landmark setting.
With the East Aspetuck River rushing along behind it, the White Horse Country Pub and Restaurant in the Marbledale section of Washington has the setting down, for starters.
Both a deck and a patio are popular perches in warm weather, but this time of year the pub capitalizes on its interior charms. Leaded glass style windows are just one aspect of classic pub design that create a physical and mental separate of exterior and interior, creating something of a womb-like atmosphere where it seems fitting to eat comfort food and wash it down with traditional ale or fine wine.
The crowning achievement, though, from a Winter perspective, is the White Horse's fireplace. It seals the deal that this is the place to hibernate away the worst of the winter weather.
The fact that the fare has been praised for finesse and excellence completes the experience. The White Horse offers many fine entrees, but when it's freezing outside and blazing inside, why not chose from among some of the basic and best dishes, such as sirloin chili, French onion soup, the steakhouse shepherd's pie, or fish-and-chips.
The White Horse Country Pub and Restaurant is located at 258 New Milford Turnpike in Washington. For more information, call 860-868-1496, or visit www.whitehorsecountrypub.com
